Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is a must-see autumn destination

Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is a must-see autumn destination

A small city in Upstate New York hosts one of the most popular farmers markets in the Northeast. The harvest bounty and vibrant foliage in the surrounding countryside makes this an essential destination for fall travelers.

Every Saturday, from May through October, the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market transforms six city blocks in the heart of historic downtown Troy into an open-air street festival that could easily pass for a scene in Europe.

The 19th century architecture that frames the market provides a unique setting and draw for visitors. Movie fans will recognize many of the landmarks from films and television.

The Rice Building stands out among the 19th Century architecture that provides the backdrop for the market.

On the busiest days, as many as 15,000 people visit the market to shop for fresh local produce, meats, seafood, prepared foods and handmade crafts. Couples, families, college students and neighborhood regulars all mingle in Monument Square, and up and down River and 2nd streets, milling around between the tents, local stores, sidewalk tables and music stages. Many stay to socialize and explore downtown’s charming shops and vibrant eateries.

Troy is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 150 miles north of New York City. Boaters often dock overnight at the Troy Downtown Marina. Local mariners use the public docks to visit the farmers market.

Three weeks remain in the outdoor 2024 season. The market moves inside from November through April, then returns to the streets in May 2025 for the 25th anniversary of its founding.

Today, the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market routinely receives “Best of” accolades by regional media and in reader polls.

Fresh tomatoes, peppers and chard by Echo Creek Farm are in-demand items at Troy Waterfront Farmers Market.

In 2019, the market earned the American Farmland Trust’s People’s Choice award for Number 1 Farmers Market in the nation.

For information, follow the market on Instagram @troymarket and Facebook @TroyWaterfrontFarmersMarket, or visit https://TroyMarket.org.
